Becoming a Specialist Newborn Photographer

March 21, 2015  •  3 Comments

For a few years now I have wanted to specialise in newborn photography, I was drawn in by the beautiful, curled up sleepy baby images that had started to become a familiar sight on the websites of many an American photographer (not to mention all the super cute props!). The trend for newborn photography in the UK has really taken off, with many parents requesting posed studio sessions of their brand new addition.

So, in my desire to specialise, towards the end of 2014 I took the plunge and joined the Baby and Newborn Photography Association (Banpas). I'm so glad I did!! Banpas's main aim is to ensure the safety of babies during newborn shoots but they also offer a wide variety of training sessions, which are fantastic!

As part of the registration process images and insurance documents had to be submitted for approval and within a few weeks they were satisfied I met the criteria and was accepted as a member.

Newborn photography is only for the brave and certain qualities/skills are required!!!

  • Patience, sessions generally take 2-3 hours, sometimes longer, it all depends on the baby's needs and babies have their own agenda!
  • Calmness, the ability to remain calm is essential, babies can sense hesitation/tension and it can unsettle them
  • Sensitivity, to the baby's needs and the parent's, awareness of when they need a little privacy or just a little time to relax
  • A strong back, 2-3 hours working with a tiny baby on a bean bag and in props can take it's toll
  • and most importantly an understanding of the capabilities of brand new babies, how to pose them safely and knowing where it is safe to touch their delicate little heads this is gained by training and constantly learning from specialists

I am loving every minute of my newborn sessions,  I'm now on my way to becoming a specialist but I will still be photographing milestone sessions, family portraits and fabulous cake smashes. I will be doing some maternity training in April so look out for a model call if you'll be 7-8 months pregnant around that time.

If you'd like a copy of my 'what to expect' newborn photography guide or to enquire about availability please contact me on the 'contact' button at the top of this page.

In my next blog post you'll get a peek inside my studio!
