Twin Cake Smash Session

June 09, 2015  •  4 Comments

One of my most asked questions is 'what happens during a cake smash session?' so, thought I'd blog a recent cake smash session, to give you an idea what you can expect during a photo shoot here at Ollie & George.

So let me introduce you to Alice and Joseph, beautiful twins that came in for a 1st birthday cake smash session.

Aren't they just adorable!!

Cake Smash sessions always start off with a 10-15 minute regular photo shoot in outfits that you bring along this is a great way to update your photos for your walls/grandparents/presents etc I love this part of the session as this age is just perfect for portraits, I always encourage parents to be in some of the images too but it's not compulsory!

Once we've captured some portraits, the parents and I discuss the outfits for the cake smash session if they've not already been decided. I'm always happy to work with parents on a theme if you have ideas or to suggest cute outfits. Clients are welcome to choose from the outfits I have available and we discuss any extra props that they would like to use/have brought with them, we generally have a discussion via email well before the session so that we can make sure everything is in hand.

Then we bring in the cake!

My fabulous cake maker Vicki at smashing cakes, is a talented and creative lady who is always happy to work with clients to create the perfect cake. Cakes average around £20 depending on how elaborate the design is and they are always delicious!!

The moment when the babies see the cake for the first time is always a magical moment that I love to capture, their faces just light up and they tend to get a little bit excited.

Then the fun begins!!

Whilst some babies are happy to get stuck in straight away more often than not things start slowly with little, tentative, touches of the cake with a few looks to their parents to check they're not going to get in trouble. Once they get the hang of things it gets rather messy very quickly, I always advise parents to bring a change of clothes/not wear their best outfit as it's very rare for the parents not to end up with more cake on them than the babies!

Some babies like to cover themselves in cake whilst others aren't so keen to get messy but i've only ever had one baby that ate a lot of cake and that was Vicki's (from Smashing Cakes) little girl, she obviously knew her Mummy's cake was tasty!

The cake smash comes to an end when the babies show signs of having had enough, it tends to be a joint effort to contain the cake covered babies and with plenty of clean towels and things on hand it's generally a quick process to get them clean and dressed again.

I've recently added a splash session as an optional extra to the cake smashes, these are lots of fun and babies always love them and they add an additional 5+images to your gallery for you to select from.

So, if you ever wondered what happens in a cake smash session now you know, they are a really fun way to celebrate a first or second birthday, full of laughter and create memories that will last for a very long time!

If you have any questions or would like to discuss availability you can email me on [email protected] or through the contact button on the top of my website.

I hope you enjoyed the images of Alice and Joseph, as you can see, they had a fabulous time at their photo shoot!
